“Sound of Music” ist einer der erfolgreichsten Kinofilme aller Zeiten. Doch schon vor dem Erfolg auf der großen Leinwand feierte “The Sound of Music” einen Siegeszug – und zwar auf der Bühne. Nicht in Salzburg, wo die Geschichte eigentlich ihren Ursprung hat, sondern quer über dem Atlantik, in den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika. Als Richard Rodgers und Oscar Hammerstein 1959 die Uraufführung auf der Musical-Bühne in Szene setzten, konnten aber auch sie sich das, was danach kam, nicht vorstellen. Eine Welle der Begeisterung machte das Musical zum meist gesehenen der Welt – bis heute!

Back to the Roots

Über ein halbes Jahrhundert später hat das Sound of Music Musical seinen Weg zurück nach Salzburg gefunden. Andreas Gergen und Christian Struppeck nahmen sich dem weltbekannten Stoff an und inszenierten ihn für das Landestheater Salzburg.
Als Versuchsprojekt gestartet, zeigte das Musical schnell bald sein wahres Potential. Die Geschichte von Maria von Trapp überzeugte nicht nur Touristen, sondern erstmals auch Einheimische im großen Stil.

Gekommen um zu bleiben

 “,The Sound of Music’ ist ein sehr berührendes Stück mit schöner Musik und Themen, in die sich viele Menschen hineinversetzen können. Etwa wenn es darum geht, den richtigen Lebensweg für sich zu finden. Ich werde gern so lange mitspielen, solange es läuft. Ich liebe es“, so Hauptdarstellerin Milica Jovanovic im Interview mit den Salzburger Nachrichten. Ihr Engagement ist zumindest für die kommende Zeit sichergestellt, denn das Musical wurde bis ins Jahr 2019 verlängert, was einer Spielzeit von acht Jahren entspricht.

The world famous Salzburg Festival.

Salzburg is famous for a lot of things. Skiing, the old city center or the traditional Austrian cuisine are just a few reasons why people from all over the world like to visit here. When it comes down to cultural highlights, the Salzburger Festspiele (also: Salzburg Festival) marks the busiest time of the year for classical music fans. Every year in July and August the worlds most famous drama and classical music artists gather in Salzburg. Performances like the “Jedermann” by Hugo von Hofmannsthal delight audiences and critics on a regular basis. But even if you are in town for the Festspiele, Salzburg has more to offer.

Mozart’s legacy

If you plan on going to the Salzburg Festival you have many opportunities to add to your bucket list. First of all, there is the city itself. When you walk through the narrow alleys you’ll know what we’re talking about. There is a certain charm surrounding the streets and buildings around the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The Salzach river, which flows right through the city, adds a special something to the scenery of old houses, castles, hills, parks and churches. Since guests of the Salzburg Festival are devotees of classical music, a visit at the Sound of Salzburg Dinner Show makes perfect sense. Our program includes many works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Lehar or Ralph Benatzky. In contrast to the Salzburger Festspiele, the audience of the Sound of Salzburg Show will get involved. The benefits for groups who attend the Sound of Salzburg Dinner Show include a reduced price, special seating and flexibility in the booking process (just write us an e-mail for a nonbinding inquiry). You can enjoy the live on stage show and add a traditional (optional) 3 or 4 course dinner menu at the famous Sternbräu Restaurant. Built in the 16th century, the Sternbräu is one of the oldest buildings in town and always was a well-attended place. Even the creator of some of the songs you’ll hear during the show walked within these walls. His name? Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Learning the songs by heart is just the beginning.

The singers of the Sound of Salzburg show are trained artists from all over the world. Getting this job isn’t easy, because there are many requirements. In the show we feature 5 different composers, who lived in various parts of the musical history – and have their own style. Every song is supposed to be sung in the way the composer intended. You need to have a broad understanding of music to perform every single one of them in the right way. You have to live the song.

Behind the scenes

Besides knowing what the songs are actually about, you also need to learn them by heart. With approx. 240 words each songs it makes about 5.000 words that are sung every day you are on stage. If you don’t grow up singing these songs, it is a lot to take in for a start. And every word is connected to at least one note. Once you get every one of those right (there are 12 semitones per octave), the next big thing is already waiting for you: the performance.

Every step you take

A perfect singer has to know a lot of things.

The stage has about 10 square meters and every spot of it will be in use once the show starts. The singers have to know what their and their colleagues next step will be. This gets extra tricky when you perform songs like “The lonely goatherd”, where you have to use special techniques to concentrate on your lip movement. The one and a half hours the show lasts are a challenge for every singer, every day. Nevertheless our team loves the job. And they wouldn’t trade it in for something else.

The Sound of Salzburg Show is running since 1991 – a solid 24 years -, which is a pretty long time for a daily show. Throughout the years many guests from all over the world honored us by visiting. We even had people from the most distant places you could imagine, like Cuba, South Korea or Australia. After our open air premiere at the Steintheater Hellbrunn, we quickly decided to add another open air special without an admission fee. People should get the opportunity to experience the songs, that made Salzburg famous. The word spread fast and on June 28th we were once again amazed by how many people turned up.

For about one hour residents and tourists got to enjoy the melodies of the Sound of Music movie, works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and typical Salzburg operetta.

The first free open air show in the “Steintheater” was a success.

After the success of the first open air show at the “Steintheater” in Hellbrunn the Sound of Salzburg Show will be back with another special! On June 28th the singers will once again perform at a very special venue. This time, the Heckentheater in the famous gardens of the Mirabell Palace will serve as stage. The open air theater adds the spirit of nature and an historic background to the melodies of Mozart, Salzburg operettas, and of course the Sound of Music movie.
But there is another reason why this venue is extraordinary…

Original movie location

50 years ago, Julie Andrews and her colleagues were filming what would become one of the most successful pictures of all time, right in the center of Salzburg: The Sound of Salzburg movie. The film crew visited many places and started shooting scenes at different locations, including the Mirabell Palace. On June 28th, the Sound of Salzburg Show will take you back in time to a very special setting and will let you experience the well-known songs in a never felt way.

Relive the Sound of Music story

If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know all about that of course. But did you really get everything out of it? The Sound of Salzburg show is a good way to restore your memory, close some gaps or get to know the story. In order to be thorough and before the show even starts, we’ll show you some original footage from the von Trapp family. During the show, our singers will guide you through this wonderful story, that started over more than half a century ago. The Sound of Music was originally performed on broadway (Rodgers and Hammerstein) in 1959 an adapted in 1965 to the big screen, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.

Blockbuster at the box office

After the premiere, things started to boost quickly. By the end of 1965, the “Sound of Music” movie listed as highest grossing movie of the year. But not only the audiences liked the picture. With five Oscars – including best motion picture – and many other prices, the movie received a positive review by critics as well. So far (2015), the Sound of Music movie ist regarded as the fifth highest grossing film of all time.

Magical entertainment

The film was just the beginning of a successful tale that went on till this day and will live for many years to come. The Sound of Salzburg show is part of the legend and will entertain people from all over the world with the same magic that made the movie so special.
